Happy Healthy Thursday 21.7.2022 - Lifestyle and b Happy Healthy Thursday 21.7.2022 - Lifestyle and blood sugar control? (Part 2 of 3)

#excited, #thrilled, and a bit nervous.

How does my #lifestyle affect how well my #body and #blood handle #sugar?

The only way to find out is to #test.

Pricked my finger this morning and will send my blood off to the Vitas laboratory in Norway.

Happy Healthy Thursday 14.7.2022 - HbA1c and GLYCO Happy Healthy Thursday 14.7.2022 - HbA1c and GLYCOSYLATION

This is Part 1 in a series of 3 about the #science behind blood sugar measurements

In one of my first research projects, #glycosylation caused us problems.

The heterologous #protein we were trying to produce turned out to be sticky in the test tube. The stickiness was due to glycosylation (addition of #sugar molecules to the protein surface) and we had to use deglycosylation enzymes to get rid of the stickiness before being able to use our target protein in laboratory experiments.
HbA1c refers to glucose (sugar) and haemoglobin (protein) joined together (the haemoglobin is ’glycated’). Haemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body.

Red blood cells live for up to 4 months, so measuring how much sugar (glucose) the haemoglobin protein has attached to it, gives an indication of how much sugar there has been in the blood over the past few months. It’s different to the blood sugar test which measures how much sugar is in the blood at that moment.

The HbA1c test has been used for many years to help people with #diabetes to follow how well the diabetes has been controlled over the last few months. The higher the HbA1c, the greater the risk of developing complications such as problems in body organs such as the eyes and kidneys. This is where the stickiness comes in. The small blood capillaries in these organs simply don’t function when the haemoglobin protein is sticky.

For people who do not have been diagnosed with diabetes, the HbA1c test can help us assess how our current lifestyle might impact our future health.

How much glycation do owe have? Are we reaching a pre-diabetic range?

By getting insights into our body’s biochemistry we can work to make changes in our current lifestyle to avoid developing type 2 diabetes. This is important, as type 2 diabetes is considered a gateway disease to other non-communicable diseases.

With these serious words, I want to wish you a beautiful Thursday!#deephealth

Happy Healthy Thursday 30.06.2022 - Exploring the Happy Healthy Thursday 30.06.2022 - Exploring the #science of #emotionThrilled to finally have received this poetically written scientific book by Karl Deisseroth. In ‘Projections’, Deisseroth describes how he and his group developed the scientific method, #OPTOGENETICS. An approach that enables them to study the science of emotion.I am in a process where I am reading a lot of books, all having the common nominator EMOTION. When you read and study you pick up the different writing styles of authors. A process, I very much enjoy. With a background in #creative #writing, this is how Deisseroth plays with the word and how beautifully he describes how he found his passion project. “Large groups of connected small things, it seems, can achieve almost anything – if connected in the right way. I began to consider the possibility of understanding something as mysterious as emotion, at the level of cells. What causes powerful feelings in the well or ill person, feelings adaptive or maladaptive? Or more directly, what in fact are those feelings, in a physical sense, down to the level of cells and their connections? This struck me as perhaps the most profound mystery in the universe – rivaled only by the question of the universe’s origin, its reason for being.” - Karl Deisseroth - ProjectionsI am very much looking forward to sharing more insights from this book as I read on.

Wishing you a Happy Thursday!#deephealth
Happy Healthy Thursday 23.06.2022 - Midsummer & Fi Happy Healthy Thursday 23.06.2022 - Midsummer & Finding Inner Peace#midsummer is a lovely time of the year in the Northern hemisphere.I find myself having lots of #energy at this time of the year. Lots of ideas and many creative projects going on.I believe I #share this experience with many.In between writing, household work, gardening, and competition preparations; I have been doing a lot of “inner game” work.I am currently reading a lot as I am in a research process for my own book about 'intuitive eating'.Starting to understand myself and my patterns, I cry.I am slowly letting go.I am finding inner #peace.Finally.#Life is beautiful.#deephealth
Happy Healthy Thursday 16.06.2022 - Embrace (all) Happy Healthy Thursday 16.06.2022 - Embrace (all) your emotionsHaving a feeling for how to experience, acknowledge and share a full range of emotions is key to deep health. In the book, ’THE MOUNTAIN IS YOU’, author Brianna Wiest writes about how having limited emotional processing skills is a form of self-sabotage.“In life there will be people, situations, and circumstances that are upsetting, infuriating, saddening, and even enraging. There will likewise be people, situations, and circumstances that are inspiring, hopeful, helpful, and truly offer purpose and meaning in your life.

When you are only able to process half of your emotions, you stunt yourself. You start going out of your way to avoid any possible situation that could bring up something frustrating or uncomfortable, because you have no tools to be able to handle that feeling. You start avoiding the very risks and actions that would ultimately change your life for the better.

In addition, an inability to process your emotions means you get stuck with them. You sit and dwell on your anger and sadness because you don’t know how to make them go away. When we can only process half of our emotions, we ultimately only live half of the life we really want to.”
So, how do we then develop the skill to experience, acknowledge and share a full range of emotions?Healthy emotional processing looks different for everyone but generally involves these steps:*SEEK TO UNDERSTAND. Find your way to clarity on why you are upset. What is it that is bothering you?*SEEK PERSPECTIVES. You are not alone; anyone in your situation would probably feel similarly (and does) and that what you feel is absolutely OK. In doing so, you can allow yourself a physical release such as crying, shaking, journaling about what you feel, or talking to a trusted friend.*SEEK TO LEARN. What can you learn from the experienced situation? How can you change your behaviour or thought process so that you get an outcome that you really want in the future?#emotionalhealth

Happy Healthy Thursday 26.5.2022 - The possibiliti Happy Healthy Thursday 26.5.2022 - The possibilities of the Metaverse? The annual meeting of the World Economic Forum is happening in #Davos this week. And, what an experience!

Humbled and thankful to be able to listen to #thoughtful #leaders from fields where my own #knowledge is completely blank.

This morning, an open forum where the possibilities of the #Metaverse were discussed. Raising many interesting and #philosophical questions.

What is the Metaverse in the first place, and what is the fundamental purpose of this #technology? Why should we care?

How will this ‘immersive next-generation internet with 3D experience’ change our lives?

How do we balance our existence in the digital- and physical world?

How will our children handle, be secured, and treated in the Metaverse?

Some key takeaways from the panel about the Metaverse: “An inclusive and open system”; “Humans are biased towards cooperation”; and“Not all world problems are solved yet and this is where this technology could be helpful”.

In my view, opportunities for an even more cooperative future.

My own skepticism would go in the direction of how do we incorporate this new immersive technology to not neglect our basic human needs?

The French sp Happy Healthy Thursday 19.5.2022

The French speak of ‘Joie de Vivre’.

Here’s a picture of me enjoying life in Paris. I am trying snails for the first time. Even though I am not a fan of the snails eating up my garden, when soaked in a garlic-parsley pesto, they are delicious.

Although their non-fat phobia, the French are claimed to have fewer heart attacks than other westernized countries.

Science has investigated this French Paradox. Could it be all the resveratrol from the red wine that the French drink that renders them less prone to heart disease?

Probably not. I believe it is more due to the way French people in general pursue their life. In my view, they are culturally better at Deep Health.

Currently, I am in the process of crafting an e-book together with Lyndall Thomas @ramblecommunications on the topic of ‘Intuitive Eating and Living’.The purpose of this book is to push this important message out loud.  Constant worrying is stressful. From a scientific point of view, we know that chronic low-level stress is coupled with many disease states.

If we want to age gracefully, we need to tackle our worries.

Constant worrying about eating and body weight is stressful.

When we find more love in our food, we worry less. We become more content and peaceful.

At this time, I am in the process of interviewing people about this topic. So, if you are interested to have your voice heard, I am happy to chat with you.

Today’s pos Happy Healthy Thursday 12.5.2022

Today’s post is a #celebration of my two best #friends.

I am in Sweden right now, and here they have special days for almost everything.

From the Cinnamon bun, Pizza, and Waffle day, to the Tulip, Winnie the Pooh, and a special day for exchanging one's passwords.

Yesterday was the old friends' day.

Today, it’s the day of the diary.

As I and my husband settle in our vacation house in Sweden, we end up having nightlong discussions. In this setting, we find ourselves having so much to reflect upon. In our latest deep-going chat, my husband expressed his appreciation of my habit of daily journaling. He claimed to notice a #change in me after starting this habit.

I simply #love the two of you and I can’t imagine a day without either of you. You give my life #meaning.

Happy Healthy Thursday 5.5.2022 - What happens whe Happy Healthy Thursday 5.5.2022 - What happens when we exercise?

The body and its systems are complex. Things that at a first glance may appear stressful and unhealthy are in fact healthy for us in small, pulsatile doses.

Peter Attia and Layne Norton on the topic of exercise…

“If I was your medical doctor and I told you that I would put you through a #treatment that is going to make you elevate your heart rate, elevate your inflammatory markers, elevate your reactive oxygen species, raise your blood pressure, and increase your hepatic glucose output - what would you say about that?”

Exercise does all those things to us.

So, why is #exercise good for us?

Because it is a short-term stressor that the body responds to, quite similar to how we prepare the body for nasty #future viral attacks by having a vaccine shot. It is a controlled dose of #stress that our body can handle.

Now, the trick is just to find the right dose of exercise so that it strengthen us.

Happy Healthy SATURDAYNo kettlebell in my hand t Happy Healthy SATURDAYNo kettlebell in my hand today but a FATTY ACID test. This is a test that I recommend anyone taking who is curious to have a deeper look into the #biochemistry of their #cells. It gives us complimentary data to the normal blood draw we do when visiting our doctor. In such a blood panel we get insights into the status of our immune system, our sodium and potassium levels etc., as well as the different levels of LDL- and HDL-cholesterol in our blood.

But maybe you are also curious to know:

- Do I have the right balance and composition of the fatty acids that builds my cellular membranes for my cells to work efficiently?

- How much saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated #fat do I have in the membranes that build the walls of my cells?

- Do I have enough of the essential fatty acids #omega-3 and #omega-6, and are they in the right proportion to each other for optimal cell #health? With a biochemistry and science background, I am simply passionate about walking people through this kind of blood data.

Send me a private message, if you are curious to learn more.Wishing you a beautiful weekend!
